Are Dental Implants Painful? What to Expect From Your Treatment

26/02/2026

A before and after of a dental patient who received dental implants at North Down Dental & Implant Clinic in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

Many people in Northern Ireland avoid avoid visiting the dentist for dental implant treatment due to fear of pain or discomfort during treatment. As experts in dental implants, we here at North Down Dental completely understand any fears and concerns surrounding the procedure and aim to ease worries by clearly explaining every stage of treatment and how comfort is prioritised throughout.

This guide focuses specifically on pain, discomfort and recovery, explaining what patients at North Down Dental can realistically expect before, during and after dental implant treatment.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a long-term, clinically proven method of replacing missing teeth. They consist of a small titanium post placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Once healed, a custom-made crown or bridge is attached on top.

Here at North Down Dental and Implant Clinic in Bangor, dental implants are offered as a long-term solution for replacing single or multiple missing teeth, supporting full-arch restorations, and as part of wider restorative or cosmetic treatment plans. Each treatment plan is tailored specifically to each patient and their unique dental needs. While the procedure is surgical in nature, modern techniques, careful planning and local anaesthetic are used to prioritise patient comfort throughout treatment at North Down Dental.

Does getting a dental implant hurt?

Dental implant placement is carried out under local anaesthetic at North Down Dental, meaning the area being treated is fully numb during the procedure. Patients should not feel pain during implant placement, although sensations such as pressure or vibration may be experienced.

For patients who feel anxious about dental treatment, sedation options may be discussed during consultation, with suitability being determined based on each patient’s individual circumstances.

After the procedure, it is normal to experience minor soreness, swelling and tenderness around the implant site, but these symptoms are typically temporary and vary depending on the complexity of treatment and individual healing response of the patient.

What happens during dental implant treatment?

Consultation and Assessment for Dental Implants

Your dental implant treatment at North Down Dental will begin with a consultation. Our expert Implant Dentist, Dr Michael Rowland, will carry out a full assessment and examination of your mouth and perform digital imaging including X-rays and 3D scans. This is a completely painless appointment and allows us to plan your treatment in a way that prioritises both precision and patient comfort.

Following the consultation, our team will be able to tell you exact treatment times, full costs, and you’ll be able to bring up any questions or concerns you may have around your dental implant treatment. For dental patients with extreme anxieties around dental implants, the consultation brings an opportunity to discuss sedation options and how we can tailor your experience to ensure you feel as comfortable and supported as possible throughout your treatment.

Treatment Planning for Dental Implants

We will use the digital scans to devise a bespoke plan for your dental implant treatment at North Down Dental. This modern technology allows us to accurately and precisely plan for dental implant procedures, reducing treatment time so dental patients in Northern Ireland can get their new smile quicker. Careful digital planning also helps reduce surgical time and improves accuracy, which can contribute to a more comfortable overall treatment experience. This will also allow us to determine if our patients need any preparatory procedures such as tooth extractions or bone grafts to strengthen the jawbone in preparation for their dental implants

Dental Implant Placement

Titanium dental implants are typically fitted in one appointment here at North Down Dental in Bangor, ensuring the patient is comfortable throughout the procedure with local anaesthetic and sedation if required. Once the titanium implants have been fitted, our team will also fit a temporary tooth or teeth, which the patient will wear for 2-3 months while waiting for the site to fully heal and for the implant to fuse with the jawbone. Following implant placement, it is normal to experience mild soreness or tenderness once the anaesthetic wears off. This is typically manageable and varies depending on the number of implants placed

At a later date, a permanent custom-made crown, bridge or implant-supported prosthesis will be fitted. The final restoration is designed to match surrounding teeth in both appearance and function, giving NI patients new teeth that look great and perform great.

How to Manage Pain and Discomfort from Dental Implants

After dental implant treatment, some discomfort is expected as part of the natural healing process. At North Down Dental, patients are provided with detailed aftercare guidance to help minimise pain and support healing. Most discomfort is temporary and usually peaks within the first few days following treatment before gradually improving.

We recommend that implant patients ease discomfort with over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, or with a cold compress. We also advise implant patients to switch their diet to only soft foods for the first week after their implant procedure and practise careful oral hygiene to avoid discomfort.

Other aftercare advice we give to dental implant patients at North Down Dental includes:

  • Avoid hot food and drinks for the first 48 hours after dental implant treatment.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours following treatment.
  • Avoid touching the treated area with your tongue or finger.
  • Use a saltwater rinse daily for the first week after treatment.
  • Stick to light exercise such as walking for the first week.
  • Avoid smoking until the wound has fully healed.
  • If minor bleeding occurs, apply pressure to the area by biting down on a damp swab and stay sitting upright for 60 minutes or until bleeding stops.
  • If bleeding persists or if you experience an increase in pain or swelling after a few days, contact the team here at North Down Dental.

How Painful is Dental Implant Recovery Compared to Other Treatments?

Many patients worry that dental implant recovery will be severe. In reality, discomfort levels vary depending on the complexity of treatment, the number of implants placed and individual healing response of each patient.

Some patients experience only mild soreness, while others may notice swelling or tenderness for several days. Dr Rowland at North Down Dental will explain your expected recovery based on your personalised treatment plan to ensure you are fully informed throughout your treatment.
