Composite Bonding vs. Veneers: Which Is Right for You?

08/10/2025

At North Down Dental, we know the importance of a confident smile and how much happier our patients are once they finish treatment. Cosmetic issues can really bring you down, but there are several different ways we can approach and treat such issues. Two of the most popular treatments for patients looking for a smile transformation are composite bonding and veneers. But how do you know whether composite bonding vs veneers is best for you? In this blog post, we will cover the key differences between the two treatments to help you figure out which route is most appropriate for you.

Composite Bonding

Composite bonding offers a minimally invasive makeover. Perfect for treating cosmetic issues such as small gaps, chipped teeth, improving the shape of the teeth, and mild discolouration. Smiles can be transformed in as little as one appointment and there is little to no damage to the natural tooth or tooth preparation needed. Take a look at some of our patients’ before-and-after results and read their feedback on our Google Reviews.

During the treatment, a tooth-coloured resin is applied to the surface of the tooth and then expertly shaped to enhance and even out your smile.

Composite Bonding Facts

  • Lasts 7-10 years with good oral health care
  • Can chip or break
  • Can be replaced easily with minimal tooth damage
  • Regular maintenance is needed with polishing every 6 months
  • Night retainer must be worn
  • Composite can dull over time
  • More budget friendly
  • Reversible treatment – can be removed or replaced with minimal damage

Porcelain Veneers

Made of an ultra-thin ceramic, porcelain veneers are custom-made for each patient and fitted over the natural surface of the tooth. Designed to makeover a smile with cosmetic issues, porcelain veneers are great for treating uneven, short, or misshapen teeth, discoloured teeth, and some alignment issues. The veneers themselves are designed in a dental laboratory and colour-matched to the rest of your smile.
